Beginner's guide: how to start playing GunZ in 2026

Coming back after 15 years, or touching GunZ for the first time? This guide covers the whole path: installing, understanding the modes, and getting through your first night without misery.

1. Install from Steam

GunZ: The Duel is free. Get it from the official Steam page — it’s the only official version of the 2026 global relaunch. The game is light by modern standards; any PC from recent years runs it easily.

2. Understand the modes

  • Deathmatch / Team Deathmatch — the classic. Good for warming up and learning maps.
  • Gladiator — swords only. This is where real K-Style is learned, because it removes the shooting variable.
  • Duel (1v1) — duel queue: win and stay, lose and rotate out. The traditional way to measure skill.
  • Quest — co-op PvE against hordes. Underrated for learning movement without pressure.

Start with Team Deathmatch, move to Gladiator when you want to level up your sword.

3. Your first loadout

The classic GunZ arsenal is almost a uniform, and there’s a reason:

  • Sword (primary slot) — your mobility and defense tool, not just damage.
  • Two shotguns — the sword-shotgun combo has defined the meta since 2005: dash, slash, swap, shoot.
  • Medkits in the item slot — surviving is worth more than grenades early on.

Revolvers and rifles exist and work, but sword + shotgun is the game’s native language.

4. Learn to move before you learn to shoot

The difference between suffering and having fun in GunZ is movement:

  • Dash (double-tap a direction, sword out) — your default way to travel. In GunZ, walking is the exception.
  • Wall run (jump + direction into a wall) — climb walls, cross the map from above.
  • Block with your sword — negates slash damage and projectiles from the right direction.

Join an emptier server or Quest mode and spend 20 minutes just running around the map. Seriously. That investment pays off in every match that follows.

5. Configure before you complain

Tune FOV, keybinds and performance in our settings guide — the relaunch added an FOV slider and hit markers, and five minutes of configuration completely change how the game feels.

6. Don’t compare yourself to “that flying guy”
